S.C.W. FOUNDATION INC. HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES

The Strength Courage & Wisdom Foundation, Incorporated established the Health and Human Services initiative in response to the unhealthy eating and lifestyles that persist in the United States. As a result, unhealthy eating leads to a decreased life expectancy of specific minority communities with moderate to low incomes. The goal of the Health and Human service is to implement programs that support better health and promote a more active lifestyle diminishing the health disparities in at risk communities through education, activity, and utilizing health resources.

The Better Health Better Choice workshop educates older adults on being active participants in their health and care. They learn the importance of knowing distraction techniques to manage pain, breathing and relaxation techniques, guidelines about healthy eating, evaluating new treatment options and the power of positive thinking.  Each participant received a companion book, Living a Healthy Life with a Chronic Condition. This program is a partnership through The Department of Health and Human Services of Allegheny County.

The Moderate to Low Impact exercise initiative increases awareness and heightens understanding on how we can prevent obesity in our families. Through a thirty minute discussion on reinforcing good nutritional habits and well-balance meals to thirty minutes of invigorating physical fitness we aid in the prevention of many diseases affecting our communities.

The Annual Bowl jam event a combination of bowling and dancing promotes Heart Health which encourages families to get up and get active taking strides in combating heart disease, the number one killer of African-American women. The bowl Jam is during the month of October where emphasis is placed on breast cancer awareness accomplishing its goal through distribution of pamphlets and brochures. Other ways to implement heart healthy activities in the communities includes team participation in the Walk to end Alzheimer’s.

The Annual Appreciation Picnic event promotes family interactions with many outdoor activities, sack races, bounce house, volleyball, badminton, horseshoes, bean bag toss and board games. Initiatives ensures that participants and the communities we serve understand the importance of building strong family relationships in the home and in the community.

Annual Gala event is established to connect families and communities effected by an obstacle with resources to help transform and renew their lives. Through dissemination of gift bags of support pamphlets, prevention brochures and nutritional product, participants are equipped to make informed decisions regarding their health and well-being.   Keynote speakers give individuals and families hope knowing they can overcome the adversity. Survivors are honored with a certificate of courage.
